Comment: The Kasuga Shrine is a Shinto shrine, and it's Nara's most celebrated shrine. Established in year 768 and dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city (built around the same period), it has been periodically torn down and rebuilt every 20 years over the centuries. It was originally the shrine of the Fujiwara family, the most powerful clan of Nara and Heian periods.
