Comment: The original project had an elephant carrying the obelisk on his back, but a rival artist, whose project for the statue was discarded, despite Bernini's protests convinced the pope to fill the gap between the elephant's belly and the basement with a stone cube, to follow the old idea that no perpendicular weight should rest on any empty vacuum.
