56.Fontana.della.Barcaccia * Here is Piazza di Spagna. The Fontana della Barcaccia (Boat's fountain), guess what, was built by Pietro Bernini (father of Lorenzo), its design was supposedly inspied by a boat carried in the piazza by a Tiber river's flood in 1598.
In the background you can see the suggestive stairway which leads to the Trinità dei Monti church. * 3504 x 2336 * (1.81MB)

58.Spazio * 3438 x 2305 * (979KB)

59.Piazza.del.Popolo * Literally translated People Square, the name Piazza del Popolo might have a different origin. The word popolo can be derived from latin populus (italian pioppo, english poplar), since traditionally there used to be a small wood of poplars around the tumb of the emperor Nero, which was nearby.
Anyway, it is confirmed that pope Pasquale II (11th century a.D.) issued the construction of a chapel (located where now the S. Maria del Popolo church is located, behind the obelisk in the photo) relying on people's expenses. * 3360 x 1989 * (968KB)
